Peril Management

Why? I just need to not blow up right?

Psyker's core mechanic, Peril, is not just an overheat and you die mechanic. It is the central mechanic around which the class gets all of its power. Almost all of psykers conditional buffs center around the level, gain, or loss or peril.

Some examples:

  • Warp Nexus
  • Unstable Power
  • Quietude
  • Immaterial Focus
  • One with the warp
  • Creeping Flames
  • Warp Rider
  • Penetration of the Soul

And these are just the ones that are directly buffed by having high peril, not even considering secondary effects that are buffed by one of these perks that benefit from high peril.

Some of those effects are:

  • Mettle (crit from warp nexus)
  • Perfect Timing (crit from warp nexus)
  • Souldrinker (crit)
  • Empathic Evasion (crit)
  • Soulblaze (Extra damage from warp rider can start perilous chains faster)
  • and many, many others

You receive the maximum effect of these buffs when you are above 83.3% peril.

Staying at high peril is where the vast majority of your player power comes from. And as such, your primary goal the entire game is to manage your peril in such a way where you stay at max peril for as much as possible.

You need to put yourself in the mindset of being the worlds greatest gooner and edge yourself as much as possible for as long as possible without ever busting.

How does it work?

Your peril value is a continuous value from 0 to 100% where if you perform a peril generating action WHILE YOU ARE AT 100% you will enter an overload state where you are slowed, cannot cast, and cannot quell for a few seconds before you explode and go down. Or just take wounds worth of corruption. If a valid peril reducing event occurs, it can save you from this state. Some examples are:

  • Venting Shriek (50% quell)
  • Scriers Gaze (50% quell)
  • Battle Meditation (10% quell)

There may be a couple more examples, but these are the usual ones you'll see used.

Entering the “bust” state is suboptimal, so you want to avoid this where possible. Unless you are Suipsyker, i guess.

Mindset

Most players are approaching the peril management problem from the wrong perspective. Your peril is not a continuous value for you to constantly monitor. What it actually is, is a regenerating magazine where different actions consume different amounts of ammo, and if you forget to reload, you explode.

Your flame staff does not: Generate 10% Peril on left click and consume 10% peril per second while charging and 5% peril per second.

What you actually have, is 20 left clicks or 10 minimum charge right clicks before you need to reload. and reloading only reloads 1 or 2 shots like a top loading shotgun where you only load a few shells at a time.

These numbers are made up, and it will be different for every psyker build, as the exact values depend on your warp resistance, but the concept remains the same. When playing psyker, you should figure out how many of each action it takes to get you to max peril, as well as how many it takes from other consistent starting points such as a single tap quell, or a shriek.

Once you get a feel for playing under this mindset, you can play with your peril gauge completely turned off. Not that I recommend that, but you could.
